Skoll Foundation Awards 2013: Health Care

Synopsis

Currently an estimated 1.3 billion people worldwide lack access to adequate health care. Many of them live in rural areas that are far from medical facilities. However, solutions that focus on access often fail to address key issues such as quality of care or the root causes of illness. As a result, millions become sick or die every year from preventable or curable conditions.

This five-minute video introduces two of this year’s recipients of the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship—World Health Partners and BasicNeeds—that are tackling these problems with groundbreaking approaches that can be replicated throughout the developing world. World Heath Partners is creating a franchised health care network that provides high quality, low cost medical services to the poor in India. And in Ghana, BasicNeeds has developed an innovative community-based model to overcome the woeful lack of treatment for people suffering from mental illness.
